Choosing harmony over balance? What do you mean? Have you ever seen a balance scale or beam scale? You know the ones where you place weight on each side of the beam to make it stay straight, even, balanced. Just the slightest change can tip the scale to one side or the other. This is true in life too. In fact, what is balance anyway? A myth, legend, or an impossibility?
Life is not made up of two. It is made up of many and the belief of balance leads to harmful expectations. Disappointments even. If, instead, you consider balance to be a limiting belief you can stop the frustration of feeling unbalanced. You can strive for something even more. You can create harmony in your life and that is a beautiful gift.
What is harmony anyway?
Harmony has many definitions according to Mirriam Webster. Our focus is on the second listed: a pleasing arrangement of parts. Also, an internal calm. Who doesn’t want that? When you apply this to any area of your life you will see that choosing harmony over balance makes sense.
Why choose harmony over balance?
With balance the ideal is to have all parts of your life equal. I read a novel once that mentioned balancing the balls of life in the air. Sort of like a juggling act. Each ball would be something different such as kids, spouse, work, home, finances, extended family, etc. Consider all the labels you wear, all the roles you fill, and then imagine each of those as a ball. Some would bounce if dropped where others would be glass and shatter beyond repair. Are the relationships in your life shatter proof?
Now, if we apply the same concept, but strive to have harmony in the movement that the balls have in our life versus juggling them we have a different outcome. With harmony the pieces of your life would move fluidly, smoothly, and would be arranged in a way that you could give your attention to each piece as needed. You can give your attention knowing that you have already or will soon be able to flow into the next area that needs you without neglecting any one piece.
Can harmony improve your relationships?
Yes! It sure can! Imagine, visualize if you will, how the people around you will feel as you create you life in this manner. Those you live with will know that you are there with them. Those you work with will know that you are giving your all while there. When someone gives their all or makes you know that your time together is important how does that make you feel? Happy. Significant. Treasured. Loved. Imagine you shining that light for them. How amazing would that feel for you?
Finding peace and calm amidst the chaos of life.
If you have each piece of your life intermingling and flowing smoothly the byproduct created is internal calm. Peace. A knowledge that you have exactly what you need when you need it. A knowledge that you will not be spread too thin. A knowledge that those precious glass balls will not shatter, but will be held preciously.
Take, for example, your schedule. There are things that you must do and they must be done at a specific time. Now take the flexible pieces of your life and move them around the fixed aspects of your life. You can create motion and flow. A pleasing arrangement of all the pieces that allows you to accomplish your goals. Even achieve your dreams. All without shattering the glass balls in your life.
